Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen (born October 8, 1958) is a German physician and politician who has served as the President of the European Commission since 2019. She has held various ministerial positions in the German government, including Minister of Defense from 2013 to 2019.

Early Life and Education

Von der Leyen was born in Brussels, Belgium, to Ernst Albrecht, a former Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, and his wife, Heidi Adele. She studied medicine at the Hannover Medical School and the University of Münster, earning her doctorate in 1991. After working as a physician, she entered politics in the early 2000s.
